What is the best month (should be winter) to visit to gambia?

The best months are between October and May, the rains come from July to September and although it is mostly at night the humidity is very high.

Swimming pools are warmer in February to September and the nights are lighter during December/January. Every visitor will have a favourite month and it will depend on what you prefer in terms of sun/light evenings or cool breezes.

You can hire different sized cars. A small one will be from £15 a night. a large 4x4 will be more. There is a car hire service next to the Senegambia hotel. It is also worth asking some of the taxi drivers how much they would charge for a full days/weeks hire. They will take you where you want to go and wait for you. This may be safer if you have never driven in The Gambia before.

I assume you will be staying in the Tourist area (Senegambia) of The Gambia.

If so it is a very long trip to go up river to see the hippo's. You will need to make sure you hire someone with a good 4x4 as the roads are not very good and you will travel for the best part of a day to get there and return. It is not a day return trip, you will need to stay over at least 1 night in a lodge or village.

There is no guarantee you will see the hippo's. Any of the guides listed on this site should be able to arrange the transport and accomodation.

hello, is the sea in gambia blue? i have heard it is not....

The coast line along The Gambia does not have the clear blue seas like other exotic locations, it is similar to the UK coast.

The Atlantic ocean can be rough and the tourist areas do have lifeguards and use the red/white flags for safety.

People have ignored these warnings as the sea does not always look rough but the under currents have swept people away.

My wife and I are considering travelling to the gambia in January 2010. my wife is in a wheelchair and cannot walk at all. are there guides who could assist us in getting around etc. how would we cope heeling around on paths/roads etc.

The Gambia is not geared up for wheel chairs. Some hotels are starting to put in ramps and I suggest you call Gambia Experience for the latest advice on this. Trips will involve being lifted into and out of open backed landrovers or 4x4's. There is always lots of people willing to help so this is not a problem. There are no pavements in most areas so it will be neccessary to use the roads.

All the registered tour guides have standard charges. These vary from D500 for a morning or afternoon to D2000 for a full day with a car.

It is best to work out an itinerary and then barter between the guides and get the best price. Non registered tour guides may be cheaper or a lot more expensive. Be prepared to hold your ground and have an idea of what you are willing to spend for the service.
